Description
The Model 3540 deflection gages are extensively used for determining deformations in compression tests, three and four point bend tests, and a range of general purpose deformations. To ensure easy mounting, these strain gaged devices are provided with a magnetic base.
Deflection measurement is performed using a single arm having an attached spherical contact tip, which is very similar to those on a dial indicator.
The electrical output obtained from the full bridge strain gaged design is compatible with any electronics developed for a strain gaged transducer.
It is possible to mount the magnetic base furnished with the gauge to the required reference surface, whether round or flat. Then the tip can be positioned to determine the deformation caused during the test.
For low and standard temperature testing, the magnetic base can only be used. Additional support considerations are required for high temperature testing.
A spring loaded arm is featured in all the models, which is capable of breaking free during excessive displacement securing the gage from damage.
A small spring force against the specimen is exerted by the upper arm which is enough to permit dynamic cyclic testing if required, yet light enough to avoid any impact on the test.
Since small variations in arm length can cause changes in the calibration of the system, the Model 3540 has a mechanical stop for repeatable placement of the arm in cases where it gets detached.
These units are standard with the arm set to determine downward deflections when oriented in the upright position. They can be used in any orientation or upside down. It is also possible to configure them with the extensometer arm spring loaded downward. The listed measuring ranges are the total displacement.
The Model 3540 extensometers are strain gaged devices, rendering them compatible with any electronics developed for strain gaged transducers. They are mostly linked to a test machine controller.
The extensometer’s signal conditioning electronics may be added or is included with the test machine controller. Here the extensometer is supplied with appropriate wiring and connector for direct plugging into the electronics.
